Alan Franco '80 Honored at Alumni Luncheon as Distinguished Alumnus of the Year
4/11/2013
Mr. Alan I. Franco ’80 was honored at the annual Alumni Luncheon as the St. Paul’s Episcopal School Distinguished Alumnus on April 10, 2013. The Culinary Club under the direction of Elizabeth Galanos Gregory ’99 catered the event where Alan’s former classmates and teachers, the St. Paul’s Alumni Council, Board of Trustees and friends celebrated Alan’s achievements.

Alan continues to support St. Paul’s with special interest in the Community Service Program where he was instrumental in creating the Rutledge Fellows of Philanthropy, a unique and special group of students who serve as the ambassadors for community service and philanthropic endeavors school-wide. The group was named in recognition of former headmaster Bob Rutledge who spear headed the creation of the Community Service program
.

Alan addressed the group with a heartfelt speech alluding to his years at St. Paul’s, Bob and Martha Rutledge, Patricia Marsh and Roger Miller. He thanked his mother Reita, wife Diane, Martha Rutledge, Leslie Lerner, the faculty and staff at St. Paul’s, and his friends from the Class of 1980. “I never dreamed the Rutledge Fellows would become such an integral part of the life of St. Paul’s. But then again, I am not surprised that it has. For this School, in talking about educating the complete person, realizes that it isn’t just about what takes place in the classroom, it is the total experience that makes the young men and women who walk through these doors.”

Mr. Tom Davis, former president and CEO of the Community Foundation of South Alabama and husband to St. Paul’s Lower School Director Anne Davis, was the guest speaker at the luncheon and expressed how honored he was to be a part of the Foundation to award a grant to St. Paul’s to start the Community Service program 12 years ago. He is proud of how St. Paul’s students and teachers change the lives of others.

The luncheon was hosted by the Alumni Council, the Rutledge Fellows of Philanthropy and the Culinary Club.

AP Government Class Skypes with Alex Pappas ’05 About Media in Government
3/14/2013

Alex Pappas ’05 works as a political reporter for an online publication, the Daily Caller, in Washington, DC.  On March 6, he Skyped with Victor Helmsing’s AP government class, who were studying the role of media in government. Alex re-read the chapter on the media (the same chapter he had read in his own AP Government class, albeit a different edition). He started the Skype session by commenting on the accuracy of the chapter text based on his real life experience as a reporter. A Q & A session followed his comments, where students were able to ask questions about Alex’s remarks, experiences, and relate material from the text. Consequently, the students had a lively exchange with an expert in the field. Mr. Helmsing commented that this type of opportunity adds much more credibility to the material, in addition to hearing it taught in the classroom or reading it from a text. Mr. Helmsing takes every opportunity to encourage alumni with political or economic expertise to participate in his class and share their experiences with his students. With Skype, he is now able to involve alumni throughout the country, not just the Mobile area.

Colby B. Jubenville, Ph.D. ’90 Releases his First Business and Management Book, Zebras and Cheetahs: Look Different and Stay Agile to Survive the Business Jungle
2/8/2013

In the book, Zebras and Cheetahs: Look Different and Stay Agile to Survive the Business Jungle, Colby Jubenville discusses what he calls the Zebra and Cheetah philosophy, leadership style and model for growth.  The book includes many of his own experiences as an entrepreneur both in and outside of higher education including some of his experiences with teachers and coaches while attending St. Paul’s Episcopal School. "The work that he (Mr. Lou Courie, Senior English Instructor) put us through reading Chaucer is a skill set that I used at Millsaps College, in my doctoral program and today when I consult with organizations.”

Jubenville holds an academic appointment  at Middle Tennessee State University and serves as a consultant for mid and large size organizations throughout the United States. He helps organizations find their voice and frame their unique perspective and value so they can tell their story in a way that attracts the right employees and customers. He says, “ helping an organization tell their story is much like deciphering Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales. It’s important to understand their unique perspective and strong point of view in the marketplace.  When I speak, I often reference the strong point of view defined by the core values that drive St. Paul’s and the great work that is being done in the past and today. It’s those core values that answer why an organization exists."

Alumni Mardi Gras Party: Bigger and Better in Year Two!
1/29/2013
In 2012 the St. Paul’s Alumni Council started a new tradition by bringing the St. Paul's family together in Washington Square to ring in the Mardi Gras season. On Friday, the tradition grew as scores of Saints filled the square, buoyed by the sounds of SPS student and alumni band Blow House. The band
features current and former students and entertained the crowd with their lively tunes. By the time of the parade, the crowd grew to 200, half of which were children of all ages. Thus, six generations of Saints (past, present, and future) gathered to share in the good times. The children had fun climbing in trees and running around the square, while adults enjoyed the delicious food, plentiful drink, and Mardi Gras music. A good time was had by all. The event concluded with alums, led by Blow House, strolling through the streets of Oakleigh in style to catch the first throws of the season.  Many thanks to our presenting sponsor CTS, Inc., Budweiser-Busch Distributing Co. Inc. and Toomey’s Mardi Gras for making the event a huge success.

A.J. McCarron '09 Graces Cover of Sports Illustrated
8/30/2012

Updated: Wednesday, 15 Aug 2012, 10:29 PM CDT Published : Wednesday, 15 Aug 2012, 4:54 PM CDT

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Junior Alabama Quarterback and Mobile native AJ McCarron has made one of the five regional Sports Illustrated covers.

The magazine’s annual college football preview will drop in stores Thursday and features McCarron with the words: “How They Roll.”

“It's great,” said one Alabama Fan. “I mean, it brings recognition to Alabama, to A.J., to the area that we live in.”

Sports Illustrated has also ranked Alabama as preseason No. 1 and predicts that the Crimson Tide will defeat the USC Trojans in the national Championship game on January 7.

McCarron’s mother DeeDee said she broke the big news to her son.

“I sent him a text. He's in class,” said DeeDee Bonner. “I was like ‘People are going to get sick of seeing your face.’ And he was like, ‘What?’ she recalled. “I said, ‘You’re on the cover of Sports Illustrated.”

The team preview also includes a breakdown of the team’s top players.

McCarron’s mother said this truly is an honor for the Mobile native who recently led the Crimson Tide to victory at the BCS National Championship.

“It's just an honor. I mean, I'm so proud for him and for the whole team. And for him to represent Alabama is just kind of surreal,” said Bonner.

The Auburn Tigers have made the rankings as well at No.24. Sports Illustrated names Avery Young as their key recruit and Philip Lutzenkirchen as their breakout player for the 2012 season.
