St. Paul's offensive lineman Josh Casher picks up Florida, FSU offers

By Ben Thomas - bthomas@al.com February 18, 2013
MOBILE, Alabama -- Josh Casher is getting a quick start on the 2013 recruiting season.
St. Paul's junior offensive lineman picked up offers from both Florida and Florida State over the weekend. He already had scholarship offers from Western Kentucky and Memphis.
Saints' coach Steve Mask said Auburn, Alabama and a host of other schools already have expressed considerable interest in the 6-foot-2, 295-pound Casher.
"I've been told by several college coaches that Josh is the best lineman in the state," Mask said. "I don't doubt that one bit. He's got great explosion and unbelievable feet. He's very powerful."
Casher played mostly tackle for St. Paul's last year, but Mask said he is being recruited as a guard or a center.
"Obviously, he needs to gain a little weight to play at the next level, and he will do that," Mask said. "This kid's work ethic is unbelievable. He is in the weight room every spare minute, and he also has a 3.8 grade point average. He is going to get a lot of offers."
Casher isn't the only highly recruited senior-to-be for the Saints. Defensive back Zavier Carmichael already has committed to Duke, and Tre Williams is one of the top linebacker prospects in the nation.

Third - Fifth Graders Youth Tennis Teams
3/1/2013
More than 50 St. Paul's third - fifth graders have signed on at the Mobile Tennis Center for their Youth Tennis Program. According to al.com, "St. Paul's has proven the most fertile ground for the youth tennis message." The school has organized a tennis club for third- through fifth-graders, largely through the efforts of Michelle Autio, whose fourth-grade daughter, Lindsey, is a member. The St. Paul's club has almost 50 members, who received free USTA membership through the program. They meet on Thursday evenings at the tennis center. "They're all kind of learning together," Novak said. "They get group instruction. It's really great when these kids can do things with their friends. The goal is to get other schools doing this and we'll have some tournaments." Autio said the CYO league helped spark her interest in forming a tennis club, especially since students can't begin competing on school teams until the seventh grade.
"I wanted these kids we have at St. Paul's to play and compete against each other before the seventh grade," Autio said. "The school sent a note out. I thought we'd have 16, and we had 38 who wanted to play. "We had 16 who were beginners - had never picked up a racket before or had one lesson. And they probably never would have played tennis. "It's worked out well. These kids are loving it. They're so excited about tennis. We had one little girl who refused to come, but her sister was coming so her mom made her come, and now she just loves it." Autio said she was happy to be helping the students start their journeys in a lifelong sport, and she's hoping other schools will start tennis clubs so they can hold competitions. The tennis club even has gotten Autio into tennis. She said her exposure to tennis came mostly from watching her daughter take lessons. But now Autio has started taking tennis lessons, too.

Alumni McCarron Sportsman of the Year, Peavy and Shelton in Top 12
1/28/2013
Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron is the 2012 Coastal Alabama Sportsman of the Year. That was the opinion of the Press-Register sports staff and of voters on al.com. Baseball star Jake Peavy and number 1 ranked junior golfer Robby Shelton rank in the top 12:
AJ McCarron: The former St. Paul's standout was the offensive MVP of Alabama's 21-0 victory over LSU in the BCS national championship game on Jan. 9. During that game, the quarterback wore a rubber bracelet in support of Starla Chapman, a 3-year-old Bay Minette girl who had leukemia. McCarron has continued to wear the bracelet and support Starla as he's led Alabama back to the BCS national championship game while compiling the nation's best passer-efficiency rating. Jake Peavy: After a couple of seasons battling arm issues, the former St. Paul's standout bounced back in 2012 to become one of baseball's top pitchers. Although he had a hard-luck 11-12 record for the Chicago White Sox, Peavy posted a 3.37 ERA with 194 strikeouts in 219 innings. He was a member of the American League All-Star team and won a Gold Glove as the AL's best-fielding pitcher in 2012. His extensive work with his Jake Peavy Foundation also came home as he held a fund-raising golf tournament at Magnolia Grove. Robby Shelton IV: The American Junior Golf Association's No. 1-ranked junior player at the end of 2012, Shelton won the AHSAA Class 5A boys' golf championship playing for St. Paul's. He then took a summer victory tour, winning the Future Masters, Junior PGA and Junior Players and played on the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team.
