Danielle Williamson Earns Top Composite ACT Score
3/27/2013
Danielle Williamson, daughter of Drs. Linda and David Williamson and a junior at St. Paul’s Episcopal School earned a top composite score of 36 on a recent ACT test. Nationally, while the actual number of students earning a composite score of 36 varies from year to year, less than one-tenth of 1 percent of students who take the ACT earn a top score. Among test takers in the high school graduating class of 2012, only 781 of more than 1.66 million students earned a composite score of 36.
The ACT consists of tests in English, mathematics, reading and science. Each test is scored on a scale of 1-36, and a student's composite score is the average of the four test scores. Some students also take ACT’s optional Writing Test, but the score for that test is reported separately and is not included within the ACT composite score.
In a letter recognizing this exceptional achievement, ACT CEO Jon Whitmore said, “While test scores are just one of the many criteria that most colleges consider when making admission decisions, your exceptional ACT composite score should prove helpful as you pursue your education and career goals.”
ACT test scores are accepted by all major U.S. colleges, and exceptional scores of 36 provide colleges with evidence of student readiness for the academic rigors that lie ahead.
Danielle’s activities and achievements at St. Paul’s include: - Recently elected SGA president for the 2013-2014 school year
- First place winner at the state level in the Trumbauer Theatre Festival in solo female comedic acting
- Silver medal recipient at the national level of the Scholastic Art and Writing competition for photography
- Editor-in-Chief of St. Paul’s student newspaper “The Epistle”
- Active in St. Paul’s the theater program, participating in regular theatrics club events as well as Fall and Spring Show
- Selected as one of the top twenty delegates in the Youth in Government program in Alabama and will represent the state at the Council on National Affairs this summer
- Member of St. Paul’s Upper School Scholar’s Bowl Team
- Member of St. Paul’s Student Government Association
- Member of the Spanish Club

2013 National Honor Society Induction
3/6/2013
On February 28, St. Paul’s inducted thirty-six new members into the National Honor Society. Family, friends, and fellow students gathered at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church to watch over one-third of the Class of 2014 become new members. Inductees were selected for their academic excellence and their demonstration of character, integrity, and respect at school and in the community. The prestigious ceremony was highlighted by four speeches outlining the four core key components of the National Honor Society - scholarship, service, leadership, and character. John Shreve explained how scholarship was not limited to the work done for academic classes but also included knowledge gained from intellectual curiosity. John explained that the result of such academic pursuits, especially those done for pleasure, was a more, well-rounded individual who benefitted from such studies regardless of his future career. Shivani Ananthasekar spoke passionately about the need for a St. Paul’s student and an NHS member to go beyond the ordinary expectations of having a duty to serve others. Instead, Shivani challenged the new NHS members to go beyond the normal acts of service and to see service as a calling that encompasses all facets on one’s life.
Next, Varshini Venkatesan used fellow senior- Bess Nichols - to illustrate the meaning of leadership. Varshini explained how Bess is the perfect example of a leader in that she inspires others to become leaders themselves. The core message of Varshini’s speech to the SPS students was the inspiring idea that all students have the potential to become leaders or demonstrate leadership qualities. The last speech turned out to be the most emotional as Carter Albrecht spoke poignantly about his grandfather’s courageous battle with Parkinson’s. Despite his grandfather’s inability to walk and perform some of the actions of an able-bodied man, his grandfather’s spirits have not faltered and have remained steadfast. It is in such times of adversity, Carter maintained, that character is revealed.
As the new members assembled on the front steps of the church, one thing stood out above the rest: diversity. The new inductees represent all aspects of St. Paul’s Episcopal School and the Four Pillars of a St. Paul’s education: the arts, athletics, spirituality, and academic excellence.
Congratulations to new inductees Alana Babington, Taylor Bahos, Abigail Blankenship, Anna Braswell, Zavier Carmichael, Virginia Cottrell, Ryan Cox, Kellsey Daggett, Conner Denton, Holly Friedlander, Andie Goodwin, Fox Haas Jr., Mary Hanlon Hale, Eleanor Hanceri, Alex Henry, Baylor Jeffries, Harrison Jordan, John Kavula, Hallie King, Brewer Kirkendall, Jessica Knezha, Klaudia Larson, Kelley Ann Mitchell, Whitney Myers, Wade Naritoku, Matthew O’Connor, Rebecca Pober, Jack Rebarchak II, Graham Reeves, Turner Sankey, Shelley Spires , Katherine Steadman, Hyland Stockton, Virginia Vichi-Miller, Kramer Volkman Jr., and Danielle Williamson.

Youth Judicial 2012 Verdict: Guilty…of Having a Great Time!
Following last year’s Youth Judicial delegation of four teams, this season St. Paul’s sent eight (comprised of fifty-one students) to Montgomery to compete in the statewide mock-trial competition. SPS had one team finish in the Top Ten, whose members included Rosey Latham, Tres Bodet, Carter Albrecht, Abby Castillo, Ashten Stanford, and Katelanne Whitehead.
Additionally, St. Paul’s had two Top Twenty teams: Kennedy Studdard, Erin Granger, Allie Frederick, Sarah Grace Kirkendall, Millie Jordan, Layne Watts and Josh Casher, John Shreve, Anna Brabston, Seth Polansky, Bess Nichols, and William Foster. All St. Paul’s students performed admirably and demonstrated character, integrity, and respect. More importantly, in some ways, every child seemed to have a great time and had a wonderful experience.
The future is bright for the Saints with the school returning forty enthusiastic and experienced members for next year’s competition. To read more about this year’s competition, click here to read a brilliant and amusing article by Danielle Williamson, a leading voice of her generation.

St. Paul's Students pick Romney in National Mock Election
11/26/2012
By Rena Havner Philips, Mobile Press-Register October 30, 2012
MOBILE, Alabama -- It’s likely no surprise that a school in the red state of Alabama would overwhelmingly choose Mitt Romney in a mock presidential election today.
But for the upper school students at St. Paul’s Episcopal in Mobile, the election was about more than simply casting a ballot. It was about researching the issues, watching and discussing in class the presidential debates, getting a visit from state Rep. Jo Bonner, and writing position papers.
“We’re the future of the country,” said senior Taylor Wood, 17 of Mobile. “All high school students should be encouraged to keep up with elections, and to be opinionated, but to have informed opinions.” At St. Paul's, a private school in Spring Hill, 271 of the 366 voters in ninth through 12th grades, or 74 percent, picked Romney, the Republican candidate. Democratic President Barack Obama came in second with 57 votes, or 16 percent.
St. Paul’s is participating in a nationwide mock debate taking place in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. run by VOTES (Voting Opportunities for Teenagers in Every State). Typically, two high schools in each state - one public and one private - hold elections. Popular votes are converted into electoral votes to imitate the actual election. St. Paul’s has participated every year since 1988.
Students interviewed by the Press-Register and al.com said they’re concerned primarily with the economy. They’ll soon be heading off to college and hope to be able to afford tuition and find a job.
Tres Bodet, 17, of Mobile, said he enjoyed digging deep into the policies of the candidates, rather than judging candidates solely on their personalities.
“It’s been said that our generation is going to take the brunt of the debt, so it’s about how much of a brunt we’re going to have to take," he said, adding that international policy is also important to him because he hopes to get into Westpoint.
Victor Helmsing, assistant headmaster and Advanced Placement Government and Economics teacher at St. Paul’s, said he’s proud of his students for being informed.
“We didn’t just hand out ballots and say vote. There was a lot of preparation,” Helmsing said. He hopes this creates a lifetime habit. “We expect our students to go on and vote and be civically involved.”
