Gerry Strang

Varsity Head Coach

Gerry Strang served as the Athletic Director of St. Paul’s Episcopal School from 1998 through 2013. First hired at St. Paul’s in 1976, he has coached, taught, or been an administrator for 37 of the last 41 years. Coach Strang has served as a physical education and weight room instructor, head and assistant football coach, head baseball coach, and head slow-pitch and fast-pitch softball coach. His 1978 and 1979 baseball teams were state champions and the 2003, 2007, and 2008 fast-pitch softball teams qualified for the state playoff tournament. As head varsity coach in three different sports, his record at St. Paul’s is 440-182. A lifelong resident of Mobile, Strang graduated from McGill Institute where he played football, basketball, baseball and high jumped. Following graduation from the University of South Alabama in 1976, Strang was the first college trainee for the Mobile Parks and Recreation Department. An avid flag football enthusiast, he coached and quarterbacked the Mobile “Bob Weinackers” Men’s team to two National Flag Football League Championships in 1986 and 1989. Coach Strang earned his Certified Athletic Administrators’ Certification in 2001 and was a recipient of the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s “Athletic Director of the Year” Award in 2008. This year he will once again serve as Co-Head coach for the Saints softball team. Coach Strang and his wife, Sharon, have been married for 38 years and have a daughter, Christen, a graduate of St. Paul’s and Spring Hill College.

Ryne Baxter

Varsity Head Coach

Coach Baxter is in his fourth year as a full time coach for the Saints varsity football and softball teams. He served the previous two years as a part-time assistant while teaching at E.R. Dixon Elementary. A 2008 graduate of St. Paul’s, Ryne was member of the varsity football and baseball teams for four seasons. Ryne helped lead the Saints to a football State Championship his senior year and was elected All-State after both his junior and senior seasons. He was also part of back-to-back semi-final teams in baseball.

Ryne was a member of the first football team at the University of South Alabama and went on to graduate in 2013 with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. He recently completed work on his Master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of South Alabama. Ryne teaches Physical Education at the Lower School and also serves as the Co-Head Coach for the softball team.

Season Highlights

  • This year was a uniquely combined JV and Varsity softball season, with the 1st JV team in many years
  • Both teams had a winning season and the JV team went undefeated in 11 games
  • Middle School pitchers, Madeline Howard and Caroline McLendon combined for 20 wins during the season
