Tyler Kerns

Varsity Head Coach

St. Paul’s Alum, Tyler Kerns (‘02) serves as the Upper School Dean of Students and the Head Coach for the Varsity Swimming and Diving teams. As Dean of Students, Tyler handles school day operations and logistics. He is also responsible for student discipline, organizing class trips, and developing activities to build student character and encourage being a productive citizen. Prior to joining the school’s administration team, he spent eight years working with young people as a coach for the City of Mobile Swim Association. During his coaching career, Tyler's swimmers have achieved remarkable levels of success, including: 4 Individual National Championships, 2 Relay National Championships, Southeastern Swimming records, Junior National Team selection, and AHSAA State Championships. In addition, he was recognized as the top age group swim coach in Southeastern Swimming.

In addition to Tyler’s coaching success, he finished a formidable college baseball career at Spring Hill College and the University of South Alabama. Tyler started in nearly every game as a freshman for Spring Hill before transferring to USA. He pitched for the Jags during his three varsity letter seasons, and was a team captain during his junior and senior seasons. During the 2007 season, Tyler beat #10 nationally ranked Wichita State University in his last college performance. Tyler is a former St. Paul’s multi-sport athlete. He earned varsity letters in baseball, basketball, and swimming during his time at SPS, and was named the A.S. Mitchell Athlete of the Year in 2002.

Tyler graduated from the University of South Alabama, with honors, receiving his degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Management, December 2007. Upon graduating he served as an Administrative Team member at local accounting firm Crow, Shields and Bailey, P.C., with responsibilities in both Marketing and Firm Management.

Tyler married Amanda (Berry) in October 2008, and the couple has two children, Kennedy (6) and Colton (1). Tyler enjoys ALL sports and has a special appreciation for the level of commitment and skill it takes to be a successful athlete. He welcomes the opportunity to work with the students of St. Paul’s and strives to enhance student life on a daily basis.
