Boys & Girls Track

Jim Tate came to St. Paul’s in 1978 as the boy’s varsity basketball coach and began the school’s cross-country and track program for boys following 9 years of head coaching and athletic administration from schools in South Carolina and Georgia. Raised in Mobile, he graduated from UMS and received his bachelor’s degree from The Citadel in 1963 followed by his master’s degree a year later from the University of Alabama. Since 1983, his boys and girls teams have claimed 102 separate state team championships in track and cross-country combined and another 53 state team runner-up finishes. His girl’s cross-country teams hold the current national record for the longest consecutive state championships in the nation at 16 (1983-1998). Over 60 of his former high school track program athletes have competed in either track and/or cross-country at the collegiate level, with most of those at Division 1 institutions.

Coach Tate holds TAC Level II track certification in endurance training and was selected as the ‘National Federation of Interscholastic Coaches Association’s (NFICA) Boy’s Cross-Country Coach of the Year’ in 1998, and in 2010 he was selected by the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) as the ‘National High School Girls Track & Field Coach of the Year’. He was inducted into the ‘Christ Church Episcopal School Athletic Hall of Fame’ in 2000 and also into the ‘Mobile Sports Hall of Fame’ in April of 2008. In October, 2010 St. Paul’s Episcopal School dedicated the ‘Jim Tate Track & Cross-Country Field House’ at the track complex of the school; a $400K facility to serve as home base for the school’s track and cross-country programs. In March, 2011 he was inducted into the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s (AHSAA) Athletic Hall of Fame and that summer was selected as the ‘National High School Girls Track & Field Coach of the Year’ by USA Track & Field (USATF)/Gill Athletics. In June, 2013 Jim was inducted into the ‘National Federation of High School’s (NFHS) National High School Hall of Fame’ and in September, 2015 he was inducted into his high school’s UMS-Wright Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2016, he was named the Alabama Girl’s Coach of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Prior to his career in education, Jim spent 5 years in the United States Army as a field artillery officer, battery commander and paratrooper including a year’s service in Vietnam with the elite 173rd Airborne Brigade. Coach Tate’s immediate family includes his wife Becky, two sons Lee and Luther, and step-daughters Ginny and Leigh.

John Brigham

Head Coach

Boys Cross Country

Coach John Brigham is in his 10th year of teaching and coaching at St. Paul’s. During that time, he has taught Government, Economics, Physics, and a variety of different math courses. His teaching experience includes AP, AIP, and standard courses. He is also the head coach of the boys’ cross country team and sponsors the Key Club. During the indoor and outdoor track season, he serves as an assistant coach under head coach Jim Tate. His primary focus during the track season is in boys’ distance and middle distance, as well as boys’ and girls’ throws. In that role, he has contributed to 19 team state championships. During his coaching career, he has helped coach at least three individual state champions in the distance events and seven individual state champions in the throwing events.

Prior to his time at St. Paul’s, Coach Brigham earned his degree in Economics from Belmont University in Nashville, TN. During his collegiate career, he won two team Atlantic Sun Conference championships in cross country. He also won two individual conference championships in indoor track. He was an eight-time All-Conference performer in the sports of cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track as well as a multiple time Academic All American. Coach Brigham was born and raised in Mobile, AL, and he is a 2004 graduate of St. Paul’s.

Season Highlights

Indoor Track
  • Varsity Girls finished 3rd in the AHSAA State 6A Indoor Track Championships
  • Sophomore Olivia Beard finished 3rd individually in all four of her allowable events: High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump and 60M High Hurdles
  • Distance events from 800M and up scored two places in the state meet as well as scoring in both the 4X400M and 4X800M relays
  • All points scored in the state meet by the Varsity Boys came from underclassmen in distance events
Outdoor Track
  • The boys finished as the sectional meet runners-up
  • The girls won the Section 1 Qualifying Meet competing against 11 other 6A schools
  • Olivia Beard was the state champion in the High Jump
  • Isabel Valenzuela, Katherine Rush, Mary Howard Singleton and Emily Miles were all All-State performers and represented St. Paul’s in the Invitational Division of the Meet of Champions
Boys Cross Country
  • Won the Admiral Twilight Invitational
  • Won the Open Division of the Meet of Champions
  • 2nd in the Azalea City Classic
  • 4th out of 23 qualifying schools at the 6A State Championship meet
  • Three boys were selected to the All County team: Mac Conwell, Wilkes Howes, and John Michael Romanos
Girls Cross Country
  • Finished 3rd in AHSAA 6A State Team Championships
  • Won the 6A Sectional Team Meet
  • Isabel Valenzuela was the Individual State Runner-Up Finisher
  • All-State member, (7th grader) Emily Miles finished 9th
  • Isabel Valenzuela and Katherine Rush were selected to the 10-member South All-Star team to compete in the AHSAA North vs. South competition
