Kayla Johnson - New Head Softball Coach

Dear Community,

Over the past few weeks, we have been engaged in a search for our next head softball coach, with the goal of identifying a leader who will take our softball program to the highest level of excellence, honoring the rich tradition of St. Paul's, while also having a bold new vision for softball's future growth.

I am pleased to announce that our very own Kayla Johnson will be our new Varsity Softball head coach.

Kayla was raised in Waller, Texas, and graduated from Waller High School. She was a four-year varsity letter in softball and track while in high school. Additionally, she was part of the 2008 USAAI Jr. National team that played in Peru for over a month. The purpose of this team was to build up other national teams to bring softball back to the Olympics. Shortly after, Kayla was recruited to play softball at Samford University in Birmingham, AL. During her time there, she was a four-year starter playing center field and the lead-off hitter. She was named team captain in her senior year and received the "comeback player of the year" honors after a devastating injury early in the season. In 2013, Kayla received SoCon All-Tournament honors with a .353 tournament average. She had at least one hit in four of the five games, including multi-hit games against Appalachian State and Western Carolina. Defensively, she had no errors with 10 putouts as part of an outfield that only committed one error in the five tournament games.

Kayla graduated from Samford University in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism.

Kayla has served as an assistant coach for our softball team, with responsibilities of outfield and hitting. Her husband, Omar, is an alumnus of St. Paul's (class of 2007) and is currently coaching football and track. They have two children, Kyler (8) and Karson (3), who also attend St. Paul's.

Kayla has an infectious personality and a positive attitude. She has played at a high level, and we are very fortunate to have her in this position. I am incredibly excited about Kayla's new role and the direction of our softball program. Please join me in welcoming Coach Johnson!
